Our mission is to help build climate resilient coastal communities and ecosystems by protecting, enhancing, and restoring natural processes through innovative research and collaboration; implementing nature-based adaptation solutions.

TransCoastal Adaptations is a Centre of Expertise for nature-based adaptation to climate change based out of Saint Mary’s University (SMU) in Halifax, Nova Scotia.

TransCoastal was co-founded in 2019 by Dr. Danika van Proosdij, Department of Geography and Environment Studies at SMU and Tony Bowron, CB Wetlands & Environmental Specialists (CBWES Inc.) to reflect over two decades of collaboration and expertise in coastal habitat restoration, climate change vulnerability assessment and adaptation, and applied research.

Research & Discovery

We produce cutting-edge coastal system dynamics research, informing our own approaches as well as providing guidance for practitioners, the public, and policy makers. At the same time, we grow capacity for climate change adaptation by engaging and training students in our research.

Outreach & Education

We believe that members of the public should be informed and in control of their communities, and we aim to empower people by engaging them in discussions around changing landscapes, risks and vulnerabilities, and current and future land uses.

Innovation & Application

We put our knowledge into practice, implementing nature-based solutions to restore coastal and wetland ecosystems, and to protect communities from the effects of climate change. We also offer support and specialized services to organizations and industry conducting coastal work.
